“Rosh David”—sermons on the Torah, by the Gaon HaRav Haim Yosef David Azulay (HaHida), first edition, from Mantua, 1776, the only book from the many of the Hida that was printed in Mantua. On the title page there are signatures of the great rabbis of Turkey: 1. Hand signature of the Gaon HaRav “Yitzhak Edrit”—one of the great sages of Izmir, compiler of the book “Yakar HaErech” a long exegesis on masechet Erchin, one of the greats of his generation, nicknamed “The Ari in Havura”. HaHida greatly respected his books even though HaRav Edrit was younger than him by many years, and he wrote of Edrit “The complete and great scholar…and much light from the Torah springs from him to the ends of the world.” 2. HaGaon HaRav “Yaakov Yaavetz”—one of the great sages of Izmir, compiler of the book Tzur Yaakov, one of the great students of the Gaon of Izmir HaRav Haim Plagi and remembers him with great respect, father of the Ba’al Asher L’Shlomo, died in Jerusalem in 1875. 3. On page 110 there are 2 short glosses in the holy handwriting of “HaSaba Kadisha,” HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Eliezer Elfanderi, the gloss opens with the words “So said the young Shlomo Eliezer” like he tended to do. 4. Additional signatures on the title page “Moshe HaLevi.” Between the pages there are a few handwritten glosses and emendations HaHida in this book brings amendments that he heard directly from the holy Or HaHayim, Rabbi Eliezer Nahum, compiler of Hazon Nahum, and Rabbi Haim Abulafia, also from manuscripts from the greats of the generations that he saw in ancient libraries around the world such as the manuscript of the Maharhav in his book “Derech haim” and more. (2) 164 5 page, generally good condition, reinforcements in the title page and in a couple pages, a number of pages have defects with light damage to the text in a couple letters, stains. This book of the Hida is very rare, with important and rare signatures.
