Masechet Berachot of the Talmud Bavli, special format. With commentaries by the Rosh, Rambam, and Maharsha. At the end, Rav Alfas and his commentators. This edition was printed in a small format, and to make it easier to learn, each original page is spread here over two pages. This required much work and repaging of the Talmud was necessary. The tops of the pages have a double pagination (the original and this edition’s). Special title page for Rav Afas – Metz, 1770. No binding. Several leaves are of different sizes. 177, 37, 135, [1] leaves. 21cm. Bound in an original leather binding with blemishes. Stains and other minor blemishes. Good overall condition. 

On verso of the back board, the handwritten signature of the Gaon Rabbi Pinchas Scotch, Av Beis Din of Kriegshaber (Augsburg, Germany); on the title page, a handwritten notation: שייך להדיין מהור"ר פנחס סקוטש…". On verso of the front board, his son’s handwritten signature: "גריסהאבר, יום ב’ ח"י סיון תקע"ג, הק’ אייזיק בן מהור"ר פנחס סקוטש…".

Additional interesting notations: "I finished the entire Shas…." and a notation referring to the Chasam Sofer: "I heard in the name of Rabbi Moshe Sofer…". Additional handwritten Divrei Torah on the back board. 

Rabbi Pinchas Scotch (d. 1819), Av Beit Din of Kriegshaber. Succeeded his father, Rabbi David,   as Dayan and Rav of Kriegshaber. Studied in German yeshivas and is referred to in Teshuvot Maharzach – Bigdei Kehuna, with whom he corresponded and who titles him "ידידי הרבני המופלא ומופלג בתורה וביראה, דיין המצויין כש"ת מהור"ר פנחס…".

His son, Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac (1800-1873) Av Beis Din of Troichtlingen, his father’s disciple. Received the title Moreinu from Rabbi Pinchas Katznelboigen of Atingen and his rabbinic Semicha from Rabbi Moshe Hocheimer Mansbach, the author of Safah Berurah. Succeded his in-law, Rabbi Yaakov Meshulam Feist Horowitz as Rav of Troichtlingen until his passing.
