Lot 31:
Collection of two editions of the famed book by Rabbeinu the Chida – Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai, which were printed at the famed printery of Rabbi Yisrael Bak, the printer of Berditchev, after he immigrated to Eretz Yisrael. The 1841 edition is the first book that was printed in Jerusalem. At its beginning, the printer’s foreword (which is incomplete in this copy) with important historical details that are an important source of the biography of the printer Rabbi Yisrael Bak and the history of the Jews of Eretz Yisrael at the time. At the end of his foreword, he writes: "…to merit the many, I decided to print first the precious book titled Sefer Avodat Hakodesh by the Gaon Rav the Chida…". Shoshana Halevi 1.
Sefer Avodat Hakodesh, includes the following works by the Chida: Moreh BaEtzba – Hanhagot; Tziporen Shamir – Mussar, Hanhagot and prayers; Kesher Godel – Piskei Halachot; Kaf Achat – prayers; Yosef Baseder – Tikkunim; Sansan Leya’ir – prayers for times of trouble; Shomer Yisrael – things for protection.
1. 1841 edition. Shoshana Halevi 1. Originally, [4], 111 leaves. In this copy, [1], 108 leaves – 3 leaves at the beginning are missing and 3 leaves at the end. 15 cm. No binding. Moth perforations and damage. Stains. Fair-good overall condition. Handwritten glosses with Shemot Kodesh in several places.
2. 1847 edition. Shoshana Halvi 40. Separate title page for Sefer Ledavid Emet, which was added here to the seven sections of Avodat Hakodesh "and added here are Divrei Mussar which are said before the blowing of the Shofar on Rosh Hashana…", without the printer’s foreword from the 1841 edition. [4], 168 leaves. Old, blemished binding. Moth perforations and damage. Tears to the corners of the last 2 leaves, slightly affecting the text. Stamps of Rabbi Chaim Brody, the Rav of Prague.
