לבא בכתובים או בדברים עם הני רבנן הג’ הנמצאים מהם במארינבאד – lengthy and special letter by Rabbi Zelig Reuven Bengis, with references to the large conference in Marienbad and details about his trip to Eretz Yisrael to serve as Rosh Av Beit Din – Kalwaria, 1937.

"איכה אוכל לדלג על ההרים והימים ספורים" Rabbeinu sent his letter to Rabbi Moshe Leib Bernstein, the chairman of HaEidah HaCharedit of Jerusalem. In the letter, Rabbeinu discusses with Rabbi Bernstein the travel tickets that were sent to him so he could come to Eretz Yisrael to serve as Rosh Av Beit Din of Jerusalem. Rabbeinu writes that he will not manage to leave before Rosh Hashana on the aforementioned ship and intends to attend the large conference (Kenessiah HaGedolah) of Agudat Yisrael in Marienbad!!!  "ע"כ הנני בבקשתי כי יהא נא מטובו לבא בכתובים או בדברים עם הני רבנן הג’ הנמצאים מהם במארינבאד לחיים ולשלום.. כי נוסעים אנחנו בע"ה… ובעזרתו ית"ש נהיה… שם במארינבד לחיים טובים".

Rabbeinu was the head speaker of the large conference, delivering a lengthy speech which impressed all its listeners.

It should be noted that Rabbeinu signed his name as Rosh Av Beit Din of HaEidah HaCharedit of Jerusalem although he had not yet arrived in Eretz Yisrael and was still serving as Av Beit Din of Kalwaria. For several reasons, Rabbeinu’s arrival in Eretz Yisrael was de;ayed and he reached Jerusalem only in 1938.

The Gaon Rabbi Zelig Reuven Bengis (1864-1953) served as Rav in Kalwaria, Belarus and then as Gaon Av Beit Din of HaEidah HaCharedit of Jerusalem. Received his rabbinic Semicha from the Natziv of Volozhin, Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor and Rabbi Shlomo Hacohen of Vilna. Author of Lifalgut Reuven and more. Among his disciples were Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv.

Was a famed Gaon. It is told that his in-law wanted to know whether all that was said of him was true so he sent a letter to the Rav of the Kollel, Rabbi Yaakov Yosef, who was then living in Vilna and who replied: "ולדעתי יהיה מגאוני הזמן – ויתר הדברים אוכל להודיעו כי בפה ווילנא היו רוצים בו גדולי הרבנים דפה".
