Lot 48:
Set of the Bavli Talmud, with Hilchot Rav Alfas (Rif), "published by the committee of the union of rabbis in the American Zone of Germany with the assistance of the USA Military Rule and the JOINT in Germany" – Munich-Heidelberg, 1948. The first edition had two title pages for each volume, the first of them yellow with a special inscription for this Shas. In this set, these title pages do not appear. The set includes the tractates of the Shas, all with matching bindings; the tractates of Shabbat and Eruvin were published by Pardes and are in a smaller format.
Background: Since 1946, the Union of Rabbis in Germany, with the assistance of the American army and the JOINT, published the Shas for Holocaust survivors. At first, only single tractates were printed until in 1948, this edition of the Shas was published. When Jews began gathering in Israel, the Ministry for Religious Affairs purchased all the sets that remained in Germany and brought them to Israel. The missing tractates were completed with copies of other editions from other years.
On the title page of Bava Kama, the name of the Masechet, which appears in red on all other volumes, was omitted. Some blemishes. Fine matching bindings. Good overall condiiton.
