2 fine Wimpels, as the ancient custom of Ashkenaz to absorb the blood of the Milah with white cloth and then, when the child is three years old, to give it to a synagogue to wrap the Sefer Torah with it. The cloth is decorated with needlework or illustration and the child’s name. Some say that the beautiful custom is based on the Tosfot on the Talmud.
This pair had belonged to a couple of brothers who were born within a short period of time.
1. Width: 17-18 cm. Length: 260 cm. On it, an artistic, colorful inscription: "אורי בר צבי המכונה פהיליפפ שטעעג נולד במזל טוב ז חשון תר"ס לפ"ק יגדל בתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים אמן סלה" and an illustration of a Sefer Torah. Blood stains? Good condition.
2. Width: 17-18 cm. Length: 240 cm. "מיכאל בר צבי המכונה מאקס שטעעג נולד במזל טוב ו’ אדר תרנ"ט לפ"ק יגדל בתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים אמן סלה". אמן סלה" and an illustration of a Sefer Torah. Blood stains? Good condition.
Most Wimpels were destroyed in Kristallnacht or during the Holocaust and the few that remained are exhibited in museums in Israel and abroad.
