Lot 362:
interesting letter with fascinating details about the elections for the Glasgow (Ireland) rabbinate, by Rabbi Tuvia Weinstein, chief prayer leader, and his son Rabbi Yaakov, addressed to Rabbi Hillel Medalia, Av Beit Din of Leeds – Glasgow, 1939.
The letter indicates that Rabbi Hillel Medalia was nominated for the rabbinate of Glasgow. Rabbi Tubia Weinstein and his son, who were important dignitaries of the community, supported Rabbi Medalia’s nominated whereas, others supported another nominee. In their letter to Rabbi Medalia, Rabbi Weinstein and his son describe the steps taken by Rabbi Medalia’s oponnents and advising him: "אולי ישתדל שהרה"ג אברמסיק יטלפן אליהם ויזמנם וידבר קשות, אני יודע שדברי הגאון הנ"ל חשובים מאד בעינם ובעיני כל קהילתנו, עכשיו היא השעה לדעת את תוכן שאלת הרבנות בקהלתנו... (maybe the Gaon Rav Rabbi Abramsik call them and invite them and speak harshly. I know they and our entire community percieve the words of this Gaon as most important and now is the time to address the question of the rabbinate in our community…). His son, Rabbi Yaakov, writes to Rabbi Medalia: ורק הבוקר נודע לאבא שהעניין כה רציני.. נוסעים מחר ללונדון לראות במי ומי. הם לפי מה ששמעתי מאד רוצים את… ובסודי סודות צריך להיות שאנו נותנים את הידיעות האחרונות והמדיוקות…" (Only this morning father realized the matter was so serious…)
A fascinating peek into the process of electing a Rav in ancient European communities. from the distance of time, these matters seem trivial; then, however, the decisions were fateful…
