"אין אנו מסכימים בשום אופן להעביר את משרד ההקדשות של היהודים לרשות משרד הרבנות" (We refuse to transfer the authority over the Jeiwsh Hakdashot office to the Chief Rabbinate).
Fascinating historical document that was sent to the British authorities in which the Chareidi institutions of Jerusalem inform the British authorities that they refuse to be taken under the wing of the Chief Rabbinate. The document is signed by the Gabaim of the Kollelim headed by Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld – Jerusalem, 1922.
Background: With the end of World War I and the onset of the British Mandate, the British High Commissioner informed the Jews of Eretz Yisrael that they must establish orderly, official organizations to represent them. This order caused embarrassment and a struggle between the non-religious and Chareidi communities and the Chareidi community among itself. The Chareidi community was divided into two camps: that of the Chief Rabbinate and that of HaEidah HaChareidit. The British authorities considered the Chief Rabbinate as the official representative of the religious institutions of Jerusalem, which, of course, was unacceptable to the members of HaEidah HaChareidit, as indicated by this historical document.
In the document, the Gabaim inform the British authorities that they refuse to transfer the authority over the Jeiwsh Hakdashot office to the Chief Rabbinate: "אנחנו הח"מ אופטרופסי חלק גדול מהקדשות… מתכבדים להודיע בזה אל כבוד הממשלה יר"ה כי אין אנו מסכימים בשום אופן להעביר את משרד ההקדשות לרשות משרד הרבנות" !!!
The document is signed by the managers of Kollel Shomrei Hachomot, the Diskin Orphanage, Kollel Vohlin, Kollel Chabad, Kollel Munkatch and more.
In the center of the document, Maran rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld signed: "ובעה"ח שלא לעורר חלילה מחלוקת יוסף חיים זוננפלד".
