Derech Chaim Vetochachat Mussar By the Mitteler Rebbe - First Edition? Kopust? 1819? - Copy of Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin

Start price: $700

Buyer's premium:

Derech Chaim Vetochachat Mussar, "דברי כיבושין שכובשין לבו של אדם ומקרבין לאביו שבשמים בתשובה שלימה" with Sha’ar Hatfilah and Sha’ar Hatshuva. By the Admor Rabbi Dov ber of Lubavitch – ther Mitteler Rebbe.

The place and year of printing of this edition is disputed. According to the title page: The Press of Rabbi Yisrael Yaffe, a disciple of Ba’al Hatanya – Kopust and the illogical year: "אזן שמעת תוכחת מוסר". According to Stefansky Chassidut 138 and the bibliography of Otzar Hachassidim Kehat, several variants were printed in Kopust in 1819. This copy is one of them. However, according to Haberman Alei Ayin – Sha’areu Chabad, quoted by the National Library, this edition is a forgery and was printed later in Lvov, 1850. Rabbi Shalom Dober, on the other hand, in an article in the Yagdil Torah journal (year 8, issue 59) claims that this edition was printed secretly in ca. 1837, when there was a prohibition on printing Hebrew books in Russia and the illogical year was written to mislead the authorities.

In following editions, the Ma’amarim were divided into paragraphs. [4]. 136 leaves. In the National Library, the book appears in the rare Book Collection. Ancient binding with worn leather spine. Stains. Loose binding. Perforation to the title page. Good overall condition.

Stamp on the title page:  "הסתדרות ישיבת חכמי לובלין דמהר"ם שפירא זצ"ל".
