Sefer HaAruch with an Ancient Leather Binding - Early Edition Basel 1599 Fascinating and Important Ancient Notations

Start price: $400

Buyer's premium:

Sefer HaAruch, the monumental work of Rabbi Natan ben Rabbi Yechiel Meromi (lived and operated in the 11th century), edited by Rabbi Shmuel Archevolti. Printed in Basel, 1599. 166 leaves. In the National Library, the book appears in the Rare Book Collection.

Leather binding, apparently original, scuffed. A dark stain on the title page and the 2 following leaves. Taping to the tile page and more. Moth damage to several leaves. Stains. Tears to the last leaves. Fair-good overall condition.

Signature on the title page: "יששכר בער…?", "בענדיט האמבורגר".

on the back flyleaf, important ancient notations, including:

Apparently, this indicates the book had belonged to Rabbi Yitzchak Segal Landau (1649-1728) a leading Ashkenazic Rav in the early 18th century, the Rav of Apta, Zholkva, Lvov, and Krakow. Was the brother of Rabbi Yehuda Segal Landau, the Nodah BiYehuda’s father.

All these notations have not been thoroughly studied.
