Historical letter against National Service for girls, with the handwritten signatures of the Gaon Av Beit Din Rabbi Zelig Reuven Bengus and his Beit Din – Jerusalem, 1951.

Background: Particularly notable among the struggles between Chareidi and non-religious Jews in Israel was the struggle for the sanctity and purity of Jewish girls following the idea of the conscription of girls. Gedolei Yisrael even opposed the suggestion that girls serve in hospitals and elsewhere as National Service.

In this letters, the rabbis and Geonim of the Eidah HaChareidit write strongly against the idea:"הנני חוזרים ומאשרים דעתנו דעת תורה נגד זה שקמו עוד הפעם מערעי קדושת בית ישראל לחדש גזירת גיוס הבנות בכלל ונגד דתיות בפרט לשרות צה"ל ושרות מעברות וכדומה".

The letter also implies to religious Jews who support some form of compromise: "הננו מזכירים בזה לכל אלה המאשרים והמסייעים לגזירה רעה זו, כי ע"י זה הם נותנים ליפול עליהם אחריות חמורה והסכנה על ארצנו הקדושה"

The letter is signed by the following Geonim:

– Rabbi Zelig Reuven Bengis, Gaon Av Beit Din.
– Rabbi Pinchas Epstein Rosh Av Beit Din.
– Rabbi Yisrael Yitzchak Halevi Reisman Rosh Av Beit Din of Badatz Chassidim.
– Rabbi David Halevi Jungreis Rosh Av Beit Din.
