Lot 75:
"אזי תהיה מלחמה ומחלקה גדולה אשר בין אחים תפריד" (Then there will be a war and great dispute which shall separate brothers) Letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Yosef Halevi Katz, Rav of the Misnagdim community of Głębokie addressed to the Gaon Chassid Rabbi Menachem Mendel Kuperstock, who was nominee for the position of Rav of the Chassidic community of the town – Głębokie, 1929.
Background: Rabbi Yosef Zundel Robinson was the Rav of the Chabadic community of Głębokie. In 1930, Rabbi Robinson retunred to his hometown, Radoshkevitz, apparently to prepare for becoming the Av Beit Din of the community, succeeding his father who was planning to immigrate to Erezt Yisrael.
The Admor the Rayatz recommended to appoint Rabbi Menachem Mendel Kuperstock as the Rav of the Chabadic community. Rabbi Kuperstok indeed came to the city for Sabbath and the Chassidim were pleased with him, accepting him immediately as the Rav of their community.
The problem was that the Misnagdim community objected to the appointment, demanding that the son-in-law of the local Rav be appointed Rav of the Chassidic community.
This letter was sent by Rabbi Yosef Halevi Katz, the local Rav, to Rabbi Kuperstock, announcing that most of the Chasidim support the appointment of his son-in-law and asking Rabbi Kuperstock to remove his candidacy for the sake of peace.
Lengthy letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Katz, on official stationery.
