The Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Canal (1862-1942) a wonderous Gaon and leading Ger Chassid before the Holocaust. Was a Rav in Warsaw and vice chairman of Agudat Yisrael in Poland. It is told that when he was 82, he was forcibly taken to the Umschlagplatz. Arriving there, he tried taking the gun of the German soldier who was guarding him and was, of course, shot to death. His actions induced respect and fear in the Ghetto since they implied that there was no hope and … from now on, the Jews were disillusioned. (Hillel Zeidman, Yoman Ghetto Warsaw, pp. 55-56).
