Lot 233:
One of the first Chassidic books that were printed in New York – Tractate Avot with the Torat Avot commentary and Limudei Avot and Ma’amar Erech Avot – by the Admor Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel of Monasterzyska – first edition New York, 1926.
The book begins with Ma’amar Erech Avot, reviewing Rabbeinu’s pedigree with stories and facts about his holy fathers. Inside the book, the text of the tractate and around it, the Torat Avot commentary. Beneath it, the Limudei Avot commentary, compilation of Ma’amarei Chazal and Midrashim related to the Mishnah.
On the flyleaf, a stamp of Rabbeinu in Hebrew and English: "הרב יהושע העשיל רבינוביץ מאניסטרישצער רבי".
The author was born in Uman, as indicated by the title page: "גר אנכי בארץ פה בראנזוויל ניו יארק, מגולי עיר אומין אשר באוקריינא ומלפנים במאניסטערישטשע יע"א". Apparently, he was forced to escape from Ukraine following pogroms that occurred there in those years. The book contains an Azkarah for the victims of the pogroms of 1919 and especially those of Uman and a poem: "ביום צאתי מעיר אומין אלול תרפ"ג".
