Lot 178:
Rare – a historical letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Dr. Meir Zvi Jung, about the idea to form a union of orthodox rabbis. Addressed to Rabbi Chaim Brody, who was then the Rav of Nachod-Brod, Hungary, 1909.
Background: In 1908, Rabbi Meir Zvi Yung came up with the then innovative idea of forming a union of orthodox rabbis in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, to deal with the educational challenges introduced by the Enlightenment Movement, which then reached its peak. Rabbi Jung, who was then the Rav of Brod, Hungary, sent letters all over Europe with an invitation to a conference of rabbis in his hometown. The response letters sent by Rabbi and Admorim survived, indicating that the initiative was not embraced, possibly because it was ahead of its time, Agudat Yisrael being formed several years later.
Extremely rare: to the best of our knowledge, a letter by Rabbeinu has never been auctioned.
Postcard: 9X14 cm.
Good condition.
