Rabbi Shimon Shkop (1860-1940) began studying at the Mir yeshiva at age 12, and when he was 14 moved to the Volozhin yeshiva, where he joined a small group of students who studied with Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik. In 1920 he was called upon by Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky of Vilna to lead the Shaar HaTorah yeshiva in Grodno, where he served for around 20 years. In 1928 he published the first part of his great book “Shaarei Yosher”, characterized by his depth of knowledge. Over the years more sections were printed (a work miraculously saved by his students in the USSR) and it was widely accepted and read in the yeshiva world.
