Lot 135:
Sefer Magen VeTzinah, a dispute and evidence supporting the outset of Sefer Hazohar, by Rabbi Isaac Chaver, a disciple of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Shklov, a disciple of HaGra. The book was written in response to the book Ari Nohem by Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh of Modena against Kabbalah. At its end, "a wonderful Kuntres … by the Divine Chssid Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato the Ramchal". The author indicates that the Ramchal’s Ma’amar "has not yet been published". The Ma’amar was titled Kinat Hashem Tzva’ot and was later published separately (Konigsberg, 1862).
First edition (although, on the title page it was written "as was published in Amsterdam" – a forgery that was common then; the book was not published previously anywhere). Johannesburg or Konigsburg 1855. [1], 64, 64-78 leaves. Leaves 27 and 28 are bound upside down. In the National Library, the book appears also in the Rare Book Collection. Printed on leaf 63 are Likutei HaGra on the tzimtzum. Printed on leaf 35 is the story of the Dibbuk of Stolovich. On leaf 76-78, an elucidation of Tfilat Patach Eliyahu.
Ancient, stable binding. Leather spine. Dampness stains and some moth damage and perforations. Tears and some taping. Good overall condition.
On the title page, a blurred ownership notation and inside the book, a single handwritten correction.
