3 leaves in antique Ashkenazi script, a number of different handwritings, with divrei torah from students of gedolim of the period in Prague and the environs. Firstly there are chiddushei torah “from masechet Yevamot daf 71b for Pesach” with the name “Maharri zt”l of Prague” (Rabbi Yehonatan Eibeschitz, Av Beit Din, a gadol of his generation, who lived for a period in Prague)—these were printed in the book “BeMishnatam shel Chochmei Prague – Mossad Rav Kook, Jerusalem 1975.
Under this are chiddushim under the name: “from the Gaon Maharam Bumsla”, probably referring to Rabbi Meir Fischels (1703-1770), a Ra’avad of Prague and Rosh Yeshiva for more than 40 years. He was sometimes called Maharam Bumsla after the city of his birth (Mlada Boleslav, Bunzlau). He was a student of Rabbi Yehonatan Eibeschitz and served as a member of the beit din of the Noda B’Yehuda.
The second leaf has the title: “For Masechet Sukkah from the gaon Rabbi Y. Landau Av Beit Din of Prague” – Rabbi Yehezkel Landau, known as the Noda B’Yehuda.
The 3rd leaf has the title: “For Masechet Bava Kama I the name of the gaon gadol charif/sid u’baki sinai v’oker harim … Michal Schier Av Beit Din of Mannheim” – the gaon Rabbi Michal Schayer (died 1809) was the son of the gaon Rabbi David Tivli. He was a rabbi in a number of towns in Germany, and led for a time his father’s yeshiva in Mainz, where he was appointed “Chatam Sofer” by his students, who later eulogized him. Later he served as Av Beit Din of Worms until he was appointed Rabbi of Mannheim, before being rabbi of Koblenz.
Written by students of the yeshiva around 1800-1820, Prague and the environs. At least two types of handwriting have been identified. 16x20cm. Hard binding, light stains, tape in the margins (see pictures), very good condition for leaves this old and rare.
A glimpse into the Torah world during the lions of Prague and Bohemia-Moravia-Germany.
