Rare and unique: letter from Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky with a number of halachic questions, addressed to Maran Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv.
“I wished to know the ta’am and the nafka minah to learn something elsewhere” – a letter with three halachic questions from Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, addressed to his father-in-law, the Grish Elyashiv.
He asks three questions on shabbat: borer, sechita, and hatmana. In the second question he asks: “Many years ago I asked whether, after drinking a drink and a bit of it remained on one’s mustache, whether it is best to wipe it on a napkin which is a kind of sechita or whether it is better to suck on one’s lip so that it doesn’t go to waste and is not sechita, and he answered me that both are permitted, and I wanted to know the ta’am and the nafka minah to learn something elsewhere.”
The great camaraderie between the two is well known, and Rabbi Kanievsky would send his father-in-law questions regularly.
