Rabbi Yaakov Haim Sofer (1870-1939) was born in Baghdad, was a student of Rabbi Abdallah Somech and Rabbi Yosef Haim (the Ben Ish Hai). He was a sage of Baghdad and Jerusalem and a gadol of the poskim, author of the series of works called the Kaf HaChayim. He spent his days studying Torah and writing his work in the attic of the Shoshanim L’David synagogue in Jerusalem, founded by the Ben Ish Hai, where he was saved miraculously during an earthquake in Jerusalem.

Besides being a posek hador in his time he was known as a miracle-working kabbalist and holy man, as Rabbi Yehuda Tzedakah testified: “Every Shabbos his shape would change unrecognizably!” He wrote additional works like Haim Ad Olam on the ends of masechtot, Kol Yaakov on halachot Stam, Chokei Haim with drashot for various times, Yagel Yaakov with chiddushim on the Torah.
