The Admor Rabbi Avraham Matityahu Friedman of Shtefanesht (1847-1933) was the second Shtefaneshter Rebbe and the grandson of the Rahak of Ruzhin. Upon his father’s death in 1869, he was appointed to head the Shtefanesht community, which he led for 64 years until his death in 1933. He served as a destination for all Romanian Jewry and he was known as the “Tzaddik of Shtefanesht”. Even after his death Romanian Jews would visit his grave on his yahrzeit and pray for mercy and salvation. In 1969 his body was moved from Romania to Israel and reburied at the Nachalat Yitzhak cemetery in Givatayim. It is still a pilgrimage site.
