Johann Gottfried Herder (1744-1803) was a poet, translator, theologian, and philosopher born in Prussia. He was one of the most prominent humanists of Weimar Classicism who influenced the Sturm und Drang movement and early Romanticism. He was also a representative of late Enlightenment literature. Herder highly valued the two great Jewish philosophers, Baruch Spinoza and Moshe Mendelssohn. In addition, Herder was extremely fond to the point of admiration for the language and culture of the ancient Hebrew people. However, there is evidence that his attitude towards the Jewish people in his generation was more reserved.
