Tanach set with the Malbim’s commentary: some first edition, 1874-1880. Antique, luxurious binding

Start price: $100

Buyer's premium: 25%

Complete set of Tanach Mikra’ot Gedolot with the revolutionary commentary “HaTorah v’HaMitzvah” on the Torah and “Mikra’ei Kodesh” on Prophets and Ketuvim by the gaon Rabbi Meir Leibush (the Malbim). This commentary is also on midrashei halacha mechilta (for Exodus), Safra (Vayikra), and Sifrei (Bamidbar and Dvarim). The midrashim are attached here to their respective chumashim. See more at Stefanski Sifrei Yesod p. 13 (appendices).

Following sections:
– Bereishit: first edition, Warsaw 1876. 234, [2] leaves. The bibliographic listings note another 3 pages at the end but they are not in this copy and it seems possible not even in the original because the listed pagination is based on a later stereotype edition. This copy has 12 additional leaves with prayers for shabbat (nusach Sfard). With a table of moladim for 1884-9. Blessings of the haftarah appear handwritten.

– Exodus: with Mechilta and notes of the Gra for the Mechilta (from a manuscript). First edition, 1877. [2], 608; [12], 448-454; 50 pages. At the end is Megillat Esther (special title page) with Rashi’s commentary and Siftei Chachamim and Targum Sheni, and the Malbim’s commentary. Warsaw 1878.

– Vayikra: published separately and not as part of a set, first edition of this format—Warsaw 1875. Even prior the commentary for Vayikra was published without the words of the chumash (with the mechilta). Part 1: Vayikra-Shmini, [2], 224, [4], 4-13, 12 leaves with prayers for shabbat (nusach Sfard). Part 2: (separate title pages) [2], 225-471, [4] leaves. 12 leaves with prayers for shabbat (nusach Sfard).

– Bamidbar: First edition, Warsaw 1879. 499, [3], 25, 24 pages. At the end is Megillat Ruth with the commentary “Geza Yishay” by the same author, with a separate title page. Warsaw 1879.

– Dvarim: ostensibly the first edition—1880. 545, [12] pages; [37]-46; [47]-67 leaves; 12 leaves with prayers for shabbat. At the end of the book are Megillot Eicha and Kohelet (with targum, Rashi’s commentary, and Siftei Chachamim).

First and second volumes: Joshua and Judges—Warsaw, 1874. 102 leaves. Samuel I and II: 1874. 138 leaves.

Third and fourth volumes: Kings I and II with the commentary Lev Melachim; Warsaw 1889. 126 leaves. Divrei HaYamim (Chronicles) Warsaw 1874. 121 leaves.

Fifth and sixth volumes: Isaiah—211 leaves. Jeremiah—134 leaves. 1889.
Seventh volume: Ezekiel with the commentary Mar’eh Yehezkel, 1874. 162 leaves, [1], 16, [4] pages.

Eighth and tenth volumes: Psalms. 1874. 222 leaves. Proverbs, 1889. 102 leaves.
Ninth volume: Trei Asar (Minor Prophets) with the commentary Guy Chezyon. 1889. 152 leaves.

11th and 12th volumes: Job with the commentary Keshet u’Magen by the author. Warsaw 1874. 113 leaves. Bound with Daniel (with the commentary Yafeh LaKetz) and Ezra (with the commentary Aliyat Ezra) and Nehemiah (with the commentary Lechem HaPacha). Warsaw 1874. 101 leaves.
