Letter in nice Sefardi handwriting from the 9th of Shvat, 1848, handwritten and signed by Rabbi Haim Nachum Mizrahi. It bears an urgent request to gather money on behalf of the Rashbi yeshiva. Size: 20x27cm. The inscription covers half the page. Light defects, signs of folding, generally good condition.
The author, Rabbi Haim Nachum Mizrahi of Tzfat (1779-1858) was born in Algeria, and in 1832 he moved to Israel, settled in Tzfat, where he served as a rabbi of the Sefardi community. In 1847/8 he served as Shadar of Tzfat. According to Arzei HaLevanon 690.
the recipient, Rabbi David Maroni (1810-1888) was rabbi of a few cities in Italy: Cento, Pizzaro, Ancona, Florence, and more. He wrote songs, translated Moreh Nevuchim (Guide for the Perplexed) into Italian, got involved in the machloket of the rabbis of Mantua regarding the 2nd Day of Yom Tov, and was among those against cancelling it.
