Letter handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Selig Reuven Bensi, from Rosh Chodesh Tevet 1932, when he was in the Kalvarija rabbinate (Lithuania).
Addressed to “Maranan v’Rabbanan Gedolei Torah and Yirah, Anshei HaShem, dear to Jerusalem, Vaad HaIr HaKodesh, etc.” Rabbi Bengis informs them with gratitude of his consent to return(?) to his place in Jerusalem and he notified Rabbi Moshe Blau shlita, and “I hope to see you this month with Hashem’s help…and that he answers our prayers…Reuven Bengis Ra’avad of the Eida Haredim Jerusalem.”
The content is a little unclear and requires clarification—one the one hand the letter announces his “return” to Jerusalem but we know that only in 1937/8 did he immigrate to Israel, while the signature lists “Ra’avad Jerusalem” and has his official stamp at the top of the leaf. It is possible that one should calculate the date five years forward because of the detail at the top of the letter “Shalom Yehi BaAretz”—adding the missing hey in the abbreviation leads to the date 1938, a year after he moved to Israel. If so, this is a historic discovery since a year after immigrating to Israel he returned to Kalvarija, Lithuania, and sent this letter while there.
