“The office of the rabbinate is persecuting our Eida in that they are striving to force our members to be subject to the yoke of the unreligious”. A rare historic letter regarding the decisions reached by an aseifa of the Eida Charedit, with tshuvot regarding matters between them and the Rabbinate. Jerusalem 1924.
Background: following the British occupation of the Land of Israel after WWI, the British representatives began to demand Jewish reorganization with whom they could interact on a single, unified basis. Following this, groups from various sectors of Israeli society began to organize to pursue a unified or separate path with the British government, including the Haredi world—which split between the Chief Rabbinate and the Eida Charedit. This situation led to constant friction, conflict, polemic, etc. In 1924 the leaders of European Jewry decided to send a delegation of Admorim to Israel to mediate between the two sides.
The historic document before us testifies to the decision reached by the Eida to agree to sign the clarification documents, as long as an independent Eida Rabbi and beit din were preserved…
A unique, historic item of great value to the history of Haredi Judaism in the Land of Israel. 29x21cm. Light tears in the margins, Scotch tape at the top of the leaf, creases, good condition.
