Rabbi Moshe Eliyahu Halperin (1872-1921) was a gadol of Haredi Jewish life in Poland in the generation preceding the Shoah, a member of the Council of Torah Sages, and a representative of the Agudas Yisrael at the Polish Sejm. He was known as a gaon but he refused constantly to accept a salary for his rabbinical work and tried instead to make a living from commerce, most of which would fail because of his investment in Torah study and his inability to concentrate on mundane affairs. He was finally appointed by Rabbi Eliyahu Chaim Maisel (rabbi of Lodz) to manage the Torah institutions in the city. He was very close with his rabbi, the Admor Rabbi Gershon Chanoch Henich Leiner (the author of the “HaTechelet”), throughout his life and even represented his rabbi’s position among gedolim.
