Medallion produced by the Israel Coin and Medals Corporation: “Rashi – Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki, Rabban shel Yisrael”. Released in 2005 to mark 900 years since his death.

On the medal is depicted, through an old French-style window, the suggested figure of Rashi bent over his Talmud with a book, a quill, and inkwell, so that he can write his commentary. On the right side are grapevines symbolizing his love for the Land of Israel, “Eretz Dagan Tirosh v’Itzhar” and the industry through which his family earned money.

The back: a rendering of Rashi’s Beit Midrash and chair, two particularly characteristic sentences from his commentaries—“all my days I gave heart to learn” (commentary on Job, 28:1), “I come only to the pshat of the Mikra” (Genesis 3:8). On the left side are the first words of the Torah and his famous commentary: “Amar Rabbi Yitzhak…”, emphasizing the historical right of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel.
