An illustration depicting a scene from the war: a merciful mother trying to put her child to sleep on an empty stomach. Pain, unhappiness and grief are seen from every corner. Pastel with pencil on paper, by the artist David Levkovsky (signed).

David Levkovsky (1906-1991) was an Israeli born in Niavel (Russian Empire, now Belarus). He grew up in Vilna. Most of Lewkowski’s work dealt with the documentation of the Holocaust and its events. In his works, in the medium of painting and drawing, the influence of modern art, and especially that of the Paris School, stands out. In 1988 a permanent exhibit of his work was established at the Yad LeBanim in Ramat Gan. He studied from 1924 at the College for Painting and Decorative Illustration in Vilna, and in Poland from 1936-37 at the Academy of Art, followed by Leningrad, USSR.
