Typewritten letter on official letterhead of “the European Office for Assisting and Organizing Refugees”, from 26th Iyar 1957, Paris. Addressed after a number of titles to Rabbi Hillel Medalya, in which he tells him that he is including a facsimile from a letter from his sister: “his friend who respects and reveres him, Rabbi Binyamin Eliyahu Gorodezky.” Handwritten signature.

Slight tearing in the margins, creases, overall good condition.

Rabbi Binyamin Eliyahu Gorodezky (Kislev 1907-1995) served as deputy for the Admor HaRayatz and the Rebbe in France, Israel, and North Africa for close to 70 years. He was appointed by the Rebbe on Shmini Atzeret 1971 as “Baal HaBayit” of Europe.

Rabbi Dr. Hillel Medalia (1916 – 1977), left Russia in 1922. He received a Torah and general education, and received a doctorate in philosophy. He was one of the leaders of the Mizrahi movement in England, served as rabbi of Leeds (England), Dublin (Ireland) and Antwerp (Belgium). He published a book, which he called ‘Sheila’, which alludes to the name of his father – Shmaryahu Yehuda Leib, in conjunction with his name – Hillel. He also exalted the Shulchan Aruch with an English translation.
