Buyer's premium:

Likkutei Amarim Tanya by the Admor HaZaken, published for Chag HaGeula, 19th Kislev, Vaad Hadpasat d’Ach in the Tomchei Temimim yeshiva, Shanghai 1943. Facsimile printing of the Vilna edition, very good condition.

This Tanya was printed by the Vaad at the height of the Shoah for refugees who had fled to Shanghai, who included many Chabad chassidim.

This extremely rare edition has never before appeared at auction and is not held by the National Library or the Mifal Bibliographia catalogue.

On the back of the binding there are a number of faded words in Chinese. The blank first leaf has the signature of Rabbi Zvi Kahane Groshka, head of the Harei Yehuda yeshiva in Beit Meir.

Rabbi Zvi Kahane was a student of the Mir yeshiva in Bernowitz and then in Shanghai (where this book probably came into his possession). Though the yeshiva was considered a Lithuanian yeshiva, he would include in his drashot many excerpts from Chassidic books. In 1990 he took part in a chaluka of dollars from the Rebbe and he merited a 20-minute conversation with the Rebbe about current events.
