Lot 147:
Sefer Tiv Gittin v’Kiddushin on the names of men and women in gets, by Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margaliyot—printed in Russia or Poland (missing the place and year of printing). The blank first leaf and among the pages of the work are notes handwritten by Rabbi Zundel of Salant, a teacher of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. Additional Mizrahi signature on the title page from Rabbi David ben Shimon of Jerusalem, called the Dvash. Moth damage, fair to good condition.
Rabbi Yosef Zundel of Salant (1786-1865) was the father-in-law of Rabbi Shmuel Salant and a student of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin. He was a founder of the Mussar movement and the primary teacher of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. Both Rabbi Yisrael Salanter and his son-in-law, Rabbi Shmuel Salant, wrote effusive praise about him and his wide-ranging knowledge. Late in life he served as teacher for the Eida Ashkenazit in Jerusalem.
Rabbi David ben Shimon, the Dvash (1826-1879) moved to Israel at age 28 with his family, from Morocco. When he settled in Jerusalem he found the Maghrebi community in a situation of poverty and lack. He organized the community, founded an independent organization separate from the Eida Sfaradit in Jerusalem, called the Vaad Eida Maaravit. Despite his desire to remain hidden, when he arrived in Jerusalem his name became known because of an act of his: when Rabbi Yehuda Papu, the son of the author of the book Peleh Yo’etz, fell seriously ill, the sages of the city came to visit him and it was difficult for the patient to get up. On the other hand, when the young Rabbi David entered, he made an effort and, despite his suffering, stood before him in full stature. When the elderly sages were puzzled, R. Yehuda explained to them that he was indeed very exhausted, but when R. David entered he was informed by heaven that a holy man had come to visit him and he should rise in his honor, which is why he made a great effort and stood. This is how the name of R. David became known in Jerusalem and many began to flock to its entrance. He established the Machane Yisrael neighborhood outside the walls.
