The author Rabbi Refael Katz (1723-1804) was the son of Rabbi Yekutiel Ziskind. He was known as a talmid of the Gra, and in his youth studied also under the Shaagas Aryeh. In 1776 he was chosen to serve as rabbi in the three communities of Altona, Hamburg, and Wandsbeck, which he did for 23 years. Because of his age he told the community of his wish to resign the position, and after his resignation King Franz II sent him a letter of gratitude for his work on behalf of the Jewish community.
