Letter of hashkafa and polemic—the Admor Rabbi Haim Eliezer Shapira was a leader of those fighting the Zionist movement, and strongly opposed the path taken by Agudas Yisrael.

In this letter he orders the recipient to transmit an attached letter to Rabbi Moshe Blau, and he addresses members of the Eida itself “whether you understand what is happening in front of you, to fight a war of mitzvah for the remains of Hashem’s nachala in the holy mountain in Jerusalem.”

The letter was sent after the death of Rabbi Yosef Haim Zonenfeld in Adar of 1932, which caused an uproar in the Eida and led to the resignation of Rabbi Moshe Blau from the Eida so that he could lead the Agudas Yisrael…echoes of this conflict we see between the lines of this letter.

14×20.5cm. Filing holes, stains, very good condition.

The Admor Rabbi Haim Eliezer Shapira (1872-1937) succeeded his father, Rabbi Zvi Hirsch of Munkatch, and was an important Eastern European rabbi between the two world wars, who led a conservative and combative line against Zionism and the Agudas Yisrael. In addition to the Minchat Eliezer, he also wrote Ot Haim v’Shalom and more. He established the Tiferet Zvi Kollel named after his father, and founded the Batei Munkatch neighborhood in Nachlaot. After World War I he founded the Darchei Tshuva yeshiva.
