Large wood-cut engraving showing the destruction of the Holy Temple, the sky aflame, and the Jews falling against the invading armies. 49×42.5cm. The engraving constitutes the artist’s imagination of the event, and was done by the artist Jan Luyken at the beginning of the 18th century. At the bottom is an inscription in Dutch explaining the work. 49×42.5cm.

Jan Luyken (1649-1712) was a Dutch poet, illustrator, and engraver. He was born in Amsterdam, where he learned his trade from his father, Caspar Luyken. He married Maria at age 19 and they had 5 children. One of them, Kaspers, was also an engraver.
