Lot 080:
Large wood-cut engraving showing the Jewish people gathered at Mt. Sinai. The nation is standing at the base of the mountain, which is covered in smoke and lightning…some of the people are afraid and have buried their faces in their hands. The engraving follows relatively closely the Biblical description, and was done by the artist Jan Luyken at the beginning of the 18th century. At the bottom is an inscription in Dutch explaining the work. 49×42.5cm. Jan Luyken (1649-1712) was a Dutch poet, illustrator, and engraver. He was born in Amsterdam, where he learned his trade from his father, Caspar Luyken. He married Maria at age 19 and they had 5 children. One of them, Kaspers, was also an engraver.
