Rabbi Shmuel Gross of Kroly (the Aleh Shmuel) was the son of Rabbi Refael of Barbarest hy”d (1898-10th Sivan 1944) and son-in-law of Rabbi Yeshayla of Kerestir. He was a student of his cousin, Rabbi Haim Zvi Teitelbaum in Sighet. In 1921 he served as rabbi of Britshe (Bitchka) in the Zemplan district, and then was appointed rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva in Barbarest in place of his elder brother, Rabbi Yekutiel Yehuda, who moved to Sighet. After him his other brother Rabbi Chananya Yom Tov succeeded him. At the end of his life he moved to Kroly, where he served as rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva in place of the Admor of Satmar (Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum) who then moved to Satmar. There was a controversy about it, since he became rabbi of Satmar chassidim who remained there. He perished in the Shoah.
