Admor Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heschel of Machnovka was born in 1895 to Rabbi Yosef Meir of Machnovka. After his father died he refused to accept the leadership position until his uncle Rabbi David of Skevira convinced him, which caused the Soviets to strengthen their war against religion and forced him to make great sacrifices. In 1932 he moved to Moscow to spread Judaism there, until the authorities quickly exiled him to Siberia. He was released only after international pressure, led by his relative Rabbi Yaakov Yosef of Skevira. The Soviets gave him the option of leaving Russia, but he insisted on remaining to safeguard the Jewish remnant who remained. In 1975 he finally immigrated to Israel and settled in Bnei Brak, until he became famous for his miracle work.
