Letter on official letterhead, pretty Sefardi handwriting and signature of Rabbi Azarya Basis, rabbi of a neighborhood in Rosh HaAyin and later the city’s Chief Rabbi. From Iyar 1983. Addressed after much praise to the gaon Rabbi Moshe Malka, Av Beit Din of Petah Tikva. He recommends an avrech named Meir Harari, who “knows halacha and wishes to be examined by Rabbi Malka”, and he writes much praise for the avrech: “he should be encouraged and supported so that he can expand Torah and glorify it.” Official stamp: “Rabbi of Neighborhood Dalet 60 of Rosh HaAyin.” Size: 24.5x17cm.

Rabbi Azarya Basis (1945-2019) was the son of Rabbi Yehi, a rabbi of Rada in Yemen. He was a rabbi and posek, Chief Rabbi of Rosh HaAyin and member of the Chief Rabbinical Council. He was a graduate of the Ponevezh yeshiva, where he became close to the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Shach. In the 1980s he served as a neighborhood rabbi in Rosh HaAyin and between 1986-1993 he served as rabbi of Beit Dagan. In 1992, after the death of Rabbi David Hagbi, he was selected to serve as Rabbi of Rosh HaAyin. From 2003 to 2008 he was a member of the Chief Rabbinical Council. He also led the Avi HaOzeri institutes. Many of his tshuvot were gathered into the Shut books of Avi HaOzeri. He was in regular contact with many chassidim around Israel and was also known for his strict adherence to Yemenite minhagim.
