Lot 204:
A postcard with the beautiful handwriting and signature of Maran Rav Ovadiya Yosef, from when he resided in Petah Tikva. Addressed to Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Waldenberg, the Tzitz Eliezer. From Sivan 1957. He thanks the recipient for his book the Tzitz Eliezer, and quibbles with him regarding certain specific halachic matters. An important line appears amidst the letter: “some of the stupid Babylonians made noise and jumped when I made a psak against the Grich zt”l [the Ben Ish Hai], but we cannot worry about them. In Israel even Bnei Bavel have to operate according to the minhag of Eretz Yisrael when it is proper according to the din and not like their minhag in chul…”. These lines reveal the Rav’s well-known opinion and hope regarding the piskat halacha in Israel and the great revolution in returning the crown of psak to the Beit Yosef. He ends with his blessing: “May Hashem grant that he will merit publishing everything he writes with wealth and happiness and expansion of his ideas. His strong friend…Rav Ovadiya Yosef.” Size: 14.5×9.5cm.
Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Waldenberg (1916-2007) was the author of the Shut Tzitz Eliezer, Shvitat HaYam [halachot of operating a ship in the middle of the ocean on Shabbat], and Halachot Medina, and was an important posek of the last generation. He was known mainly for his tshuvot and expansive knowledge of medicine and halacha. He was a member of the Supreme Rabbinical Court and won the Israel Prize for Judaic Literature and the Rav Kook Prize.
