Paul Gustave Doré (1832-1883) was born in Strasbourg and was a famous French artist who became most famous for his Biblical illustrations. He created his works by engraving. In 1865 he published the Doré Tanach with 127 engravings of various scenes from the Torah, First Prophets (mainly from Judges and Samuel) and Last Prophets, Ketuvot, and even the Apocrypha such as the Book of the Hasmoneans and Judith. The success led to its exhibition in 1876 in London and the founding of the Doré Gallery on New Bond street. In his paintings, in which there are quite a number of corpses, stabbed people and amputated heads, there is a tendency for the dramatic and grotesque facet. His style influenced painters who came after him such as the legendary Van Gogh.
