Letter on official letterhead handwritten and signed by the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel David Ungar, Av Beit Din of Nita. The upper portion is written in German and has his signature, while the bottom has a few lines in Yiddish plus his signature and official stamp. Written when he served in Tarnov (Tirnau), Slovakia. Size: 20.5x34cm. Folding creases, overall good condition.

Rabbi Shmuel David Av Beit Din of Nitra and the author of Na’ot Deshe (1886-1945) was the son of Rabbi Yosef Moshe of Pishtian. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Noah Baruch Fisher of Pershov. He served as dayan in Kromnitz in 1914, and rabbi and rosh yeshiva in Tirnau in 1918. In 1931 he was appointed Av Beit din of Nitra, where he became famous as successor to Rabbi Avraham Aharon Katz. He also led the yeshiva there, which was the last yeshiva to survive in Slovakia during the Shoah (it was called “the Jewish Vatican”). He was called “President of the Charedi Communities of Czechoslovakia”) and was a leader of the Agudas Yisrael. He died of hunger and weakness while hiding from the Nazis in the Kolisti forest during the Shoah. His students published a collection, “Halachot HaChadash”, of his after his death. He was the father-in-law of the Admor of Sanz Rabbi Yekutiel Yehuda Teitelbaum (second marriage), and the Gaon Rabbi Haim Michael Dov Weismandel.
