Important Judaica. A rare Eliyahu Hanavi chair from the community of Metz in France. The wooden chair is decorated on the crest with hand carved heraldic lions holding a medalion within which are carved in high relief the Hebrew inscription “This is the chair of Elijah the prophet of blessed memory”, Cohanim hands in priestly blessing and birds The front and side rails of the chair are carved in high relief with the versicle Genesis 17:11 in Hebrew “And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of a covenant between Me and you. P. Metz”. The turned banisters on the back of the chair are in the form of arches in the classical style. The chair features its original leather upholstery embossed with decorative flower and leaf motifs. Eliyahu Hanavi chairs from the end of the 18th Century and beginning of the 19th Century are very rare. A few examples of chairs of this kind and quality are in museum collections around the world. The community of Metz is among the oldest and most important Jewish communities in Europe, dating from the 9th Century. H: 115 cm, W: 84 cm, D: 42 cm In excellent condition.
