Auction 12
Lot 107:
On the cover is the image of William Shakespeare, and around the can are scenes from the anti-Semitic play, the Merchant of Venice. Size: 17x25cm. Knocks and defects. Ok to good condition. The play is among the most famous of Shakespeare’s works. On the one hand, it is abouta tortured man, estranged and ostracized from the community in which lives, but on the other it is the anti-Semitic stereotype of a Jew who loans with interest, is cruel and vengeful, as has been portrayed throughout history. It is performed again and again on stage and in film, and has become a byword.
