Lot 304:
A rare handwritten postcard send from Brisk to Maran Hagarbil Steinman Shalita and to the sage Rabbi Moshe Soloveichik Z”L. The postcard was written by both rabbinic families, Steinman and Soloveichik whose sons the rabbis escaped from the terror of the Polish army to Montreux, Switzerland. On one side writes the father of the Garbil, the sage Rabbi Noah to his son: “ To my dear son, our teacher the rabbi Aaron Leib! (continues from here in Yiddish) Shvelvil (Zeev) is now at their home (apparently he refers to the second person signing the letter, Rabbi Zeev Halevy Soloveichik, grandson of Rabbi Haim). He then tells his son Hagarbil about the situation in Brisk. Signed “ from me, Noah S.”. On the other side of the card writes Rabbi Zeev Halevy Soloveichik (both grandchildren of Hagarach of Brisk, sons of Rabbi Israel Gershon Soloveichik, son of Hagarach) on the situation in Brisk and the illness of their sister Charla. Their sister Esther is also mentioned, as well as their mother. He then mentions that he intends to travel to Lublin for the 28th of Sivan (On the 28th of Sivan 5698 -1938 a Sium Daf Yomi event took place in Lublin celebrating the second cycle). “I am thinking of starting the Daf Yomi. Start yourself as well, Rabbi Aaron Leib and learn together”. The sage Rabbi Aaron Leib and Rabbi Moshe Halevy Soloveichik received a draft order to the Polish army. Following this, Hagarbil changed his family name to Steinman in order to present himself as a single child, further grounds to be exempted from service. This scheme did not succeed, therefore they decided to move to Switzerland. In the summer of 1937 they received exit visas from Poland and entry visas to Switzerland, as students at the Yeshiva Eitz Haim in Montreux, headed by Rabbi Eliahu Buchko. Another grandson of Rabbi Haim Brisker escaped together with them, Rabbi Arieh Leib Glikson. Rabbi Moshe Soloveichik and young Hagarbil. They were teachers at the Yeshiva. Rabbi Aaron Leib Shalita made Aliya to Eretz Israel in 1945. Rabbi Moshe stayed in Switzerland. In good condition. Extremely rare.
