Lot 482:
The third Admor of the Chabad chassidut, abbreviated his grandfather’s book (the Admor HaZaken Rabbi Shneor Zalman) the Tanya, and wrote the opening of each and every chapter. Though the writing here is similar to that of the Tzemach Tzedek, it is hard to declare definitively that it is because there are differences here from known pieces of his writing (a clear differences is the tendency in his other writings to mark acronyms by underlining the letters, but in this they are symbolized with quotation marks. In another place here it is written “what was found in his holy handwriting,” so it could be that this was copied from the handwriting of the compiler, but which is not actually the compiler’s handwriting. This book was printed first at the end of Derech Mitzvotecha (ta’amim of mitzvot), Paltova 1914, but only until Chapter 17, from the manuscript of the compiler. Only in 1948 was it fully printed by the Rebbe of Lubavitch (Menachem Mendel), before he become Admor. This composition has only lone bits of manuscripts left, and it seems it was only copied for very close people. In the Chabad library there are a few “b’Yecholcha” where the kitzur is found, but not in its entirety. In the National Library there is only one photocopy of the manuscript of this book from the Gester-Manchester collection. There are changes between the manuscript before us and the printing, and it is hard to declare what is closer to the original! Pages disconnected, generally very good condition.
