Lot 409:
Letter requesting help and support for the settling of students of the Gra in Tzfat and Jerusalem. Signed by student of the Gra, Rabbi Yisrael of Shklov, and signed by sages of the community of Gra students. Sent to Rabbi Zvi Hirsh bar Yehuda, with blank space to fill in the name of the person supported by the Shadar. The signers are: Haim Kohen, Av Beit Din of Pinsk and the Galilee [who served for 20 years in the Pinsk Rabbinate and was accepted by the Chassidim too, moved to Tzfat in 1826 and served in the rabbinate there until his death in 1831]; Yisrael ba’al Taklin Hadatin of Tzfat, [Rabbi Yitzhak of Shklov, student of the Gra]; Natan Netah ben HaRav HaChassid Mendel of Jerusalem [known as Rabbi NEtah HaGadol, a head of the group of the First Aliyah from students of the Gra, in 1809, father of Rabbi Mendel of Shklov, who moved a year earlier and prepared the ground for his arrival. Died in Jerusalem 1847, on his gravestone is written ‘Rav Chassid Va’anu]; Natan Netah ben HaRav Sa’adi [Tzaddik and Chassid, he was the shamash for the Gra and read him mishnayot aloud. His father, Rav Sa’adiya, was head and rabbi of the students of the Gra who immigrated to Jerusalem. Died in 1849]; ‘Ari Leib ben HaRav Yosef Leon [head of the Ashkenazi community in Tzfat]; Aryeh HaNe’eman [Rabbi Aryeh Leib bar Yerachmiel Markus of Keidan (1800-1877), funded the Pharisee Kollel in Jerusalem and founded the Hurva synagogue]; Shlomo Zalman Wolf HaKohen [Shadar of Eretz Yisrael, son-in-law of Rabbi Yaakov Sapir, died in Calcutta, India in 1847]. 23cm, quality paper, good condition. A little moth damage in the margins. Similar certificate was printed in the manuscript in the memory book “Ashad HaNehalim,” Bnei Brak, 1892, p. 212-213.
