Large original photograph of Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City, taken by the French photographer Felix Bonfils. Numbered and stamped using a blind imprint, rare: not found in various collections. 40x28cm. Glued to strong cardboard, 62x48cm. No defects, very good condition.

Felix Bonfils (1831-1885) was a known French photographer, perhaps the greatest chronicler of the Land of Israel in the nineteenth century, and without a doubt, the most famous and fruitful documenter of the Eastern Mediterranean and Jerusalem. Bonfils’s photos are characterized by attention to architecture, landscapes, and figures “from the East”, in the Orientalist style. His comprehensive work encompasses many subjects not otherwise documented by other photographers. See “Jerusalem through the photography of Felix Bonfils”, published by Ariel.
