Typewritten letter from the 27th of Shvat 1947. The Rosh Yeshiva (and Rabbi of the Jewish Quarter), Rabbi Yitzhak Avigdor Orenstein, details the yeshiva’s situation (both spiritual and temporal), and asks for the Rebbe’s support for the difficult financial situation of the yeshiva. The letter makes clear that the yeshiva increases Torah and chassidut for the Jewish world, and influences the whole Jewish Quarter and Old City. The letter is three typewritten pages written on one side. No defects, good condition.

The receiver, the Rebbe the Rayatz, is the Admor Rabbi Yosef Yitzhak Schneerson of Lubavitch, the 6th Rebbe in the Chabad dynasty (1880-1950).

The person sending the letter is Rabbi Yitzhak Avigdor Orenstein (1894-1948), the son of Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Leib. He was the first Rabbi of the Kotel, a defender of the Jewish Quarter. He was born in Jerusalem, a descendent of the Rivlin and Orenstein family, who were pillars of the Ashkenazi Yishuv in Israel from the beginning of the 19th century. He was close with the Rayatz. Starting in the 1930s he was among the administrators of the Chabad Kollel, the 5th generation of his family, and in 1938 he was appointed by the Rayatz to lead it. As part of his job he took care of hundreds of poor Chabad families in Israel. He later founded the Midrash Shmuel yeshiva, named after Rabbi Shmuel Schneerson. The leader of the yeshiva was the Rayatz, and he served as rosh yeshiva. Other members of the administration were Rabbi Alexander Yudasin and Rabbi Yitzhak Na’eh, until it was closed in 1948. He worked to encourage settlement in Israel, edited the journal Dvir, and founded the World Psalms Organizations.
