Letter entirely handwritten and signed by the Ra’avad of Jerusalem, Rabbi Zelig Reuvan Bengis to the dayan Baruch Markus of Haifa, on a divorce agreement.

Handwritten letter on official letterhead signed by the Ra’avad of the Charedi community in Jerusalem. From 10th Tevet, 1947. At the top of the page he writes “Thursday, with Hashem’s redemption I hope that the fast of the 10th will turn into one of happiness.” Sent to the dayan Rabbi Baruch Markus, the Avdak of Haifa and his beit din, on a divorce agreement signed at his beit din, and a woman who has put her entire soul into her child, whom they “want to take away from her, and he is truly her only treasure in the world and her soul is tied to his, ” so Rav Bengis asks the dayanim to rule with equity in this case. The letter bears his official stamp in Hebrew and English, “Zelig Reuven Bengis, Ra’avad.” The bottom of the page has the note “16th of Tevet 1947, it was decided to make a ruling on the basis of the agreement.” Size approx. 22x28cm. Small tears in the margins, signs of folding, generally good condition.

Rabbi Zelig Reuvan Bengis (1864-1953) served as rabbi in Belarus and then Ga’avad of the Charedi community in Jerusalem. Authored “L’Plagot Reuven”. Among his students: Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv.
